Divine Service (Worship)

Installation

We believe that worship is composed of two parts: God’s action and our response in faith. The first and most important part reminds us that worship is first and foremost about God serving us. This is the reason that we call it “Divine Service.” Jesus promises to be present when and wherever people are gathered in His name (Matthew 18:20). We believe that the Holy Spirit uses God’s Word to create and sustain faith through hearing (Romans 10:14-17). The second part of worship is our response. Having freely and passively received God’s life giving Word through the gift of faith, God works in us our  response with His own words back to Him in song, prayer, and praise.

What will the service be like?

Our services are liturgical. This means at its most basic level that our worship follows many of the ancient Church’s rites that reflect the pattern where God speaks and we respond in faith.

Our services are sacramental. We uphold the ancient Church’s confession that God uses the means of Baptism (Acts 2:38, 39; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 3:21) and the Lord’s Supper (Matt. 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:14-20; 1 Cor. 10-11) to deliver His gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation. They are not our actions or commitments to God; they are God’s actions and commitments to us. As Christ promises, we believe that He is truly present in these gifts to the Church.

Our services incorporate the hymns and other songs of praise that span centuries. Most Sundays, our music is led with the organ and piano by our organist, Eric Zimmermann.

The best way to find out what this all means is to come to a service. You are also free to check out resources on our “What We Believe” page as well as read and listen to sermons.
